This is a photography event for all levels and styles. You don’t have to be a professional photographer or have a professional camera to participate. It is an opportunity to socialise with a small group of people around a creative activity.
Before the event, we will give you a list of ten words. You can interpret these any way you wish! Then, each participant needs to take a photograph to represent each of the words given and make a 10cm by 15cm print. These can be done cheaply in all photography shops. You can take pictures with any camera you have, even a phone. We strongly recommend you stick to the dimensions above, as this will help us create a consistent way to review the images on the day.
When you arrive with your prints, we will arrange them in a grid: every word will have its row and every participant their column. We will then move around to review everyone's work. Kevin will be there to direct the discussion. We will encourage casual conversation both with the whole group and with individuals. Drinks will be available in the studio on the day (suggested donation of £3 per drink).
This event will last 2 hours, but the studio will remain open for another hour afterwards for the participants to socialise and wrap up.
Here's the list of words:
- book
- link
- hustle
- cold
- spring
- isolation
- symbiosis
- family
- darkness
- solo

About Kevin Percival
Kevin is a documentary photographer working commercially with museums such as The Science Museum and The British Museum. He is currently documenting the British Museum’s collection.
Before that, he balanced his time between documenting objects in the studio and working on longer projects, such as documenting the Science Museum employees and archives or taking portraits of cancer patients using a large format camera.
Kevin previously worked on various documentary projects. One of his landscape projects - Tanera - was published as a photography book. Kevin was also one of the winners of the Portrait of Britain competition by The British Journal of Photography in 2020, with a portrait he produced while documenting the residents of a Co-op housing organisation.
Kevin Says
I’m particularly interested in how the landscape can become a portrait of the society that lives in it, and that society’s evolution over time. I find it fascinating how a wealth of information can be read within a seemingly simple landscape image by viewing it with a different perspective and background. Recently, my work has taken a more overtly political turn, and I hope to raise awareness of ecological and socio-political issues with subtle, questioning imagery.
